Accepted to the Massachusetts College of Art upon graduation from high school, Elaine Xenelis Fuller chose the larger university setting and a science degree. While working in hospitals and teaching at a nursing school, she began pottery classes at the Worcester Craft Center in 1978. Working with clay became an obsession so that she continued her studies at Wesleyan University under Mary Risley. She left her work in clay for 10 years to start a family.
Since her return to ceramics in 1993, she established the pottery business, Handmade By Elaine in a studio overlooking the South Cove in Old Saybrook, Connecticut where she worked for 14 years.
In 2007 relocation brought her to the historic Kittery Foreside district to open The Red door Pottery Studio in the former Knights of Pythias Hall where she makes the pottery, mentors, teaches pottery classes and runs the gallery.
Her chemistry background has allowed her to experiment with glazes for unique effects using an electric kiln. Inspired by nature and the exciting elements of clay, she produces elegant and creative pieces for exhibit throughout the United States and abroad.
She is a charter member of the National Council of Ceramics Educators and the Potters Council; a member of The Southern Maine Clay Guild, the New Hampshire Potters Guild and "Maine Made;" and as of June 2009, a juried member of the league of New Hampshire Craftsmen, nhcrafts.org.
